No to GMO: Tips to Stay Away

If you are reading this and do not know what a GMO is, I will explain it in a nutshell. Biotechnology companies have come up with food crops that are genetically modified. GMO = Genetically Modified Organism. These crops are resistant to pesticides and some even produce their own pesticide. Yep, the pesticide actually grows within the vegetable. When insects feed on it, they die. When fed to rats and mice, the GMOs have caused tumors, weight gain, digestive isssues, and premature death. We do not know the exact effect that these products have on humans because they were never tested on people before introduced to the food supply in the 1990’s. This leaves many of us wondering, “What the heck happens to us as we eat this stuff?” If eating pesticides sounds like something you might want to avoid, and I know some people love their pesticides (not really), then I have some tips to help you stay away from GMOs.

Tip 1 – Avoid non-organic soy and corn products – These are the most widely distributed GMO products. Most of the corn in the United States is genetically modified, as is soy. Products that contain these ingredients may include:

  • Corn
  • Soybeans (edamame)
  • Chips
  • Crackers
  • Cereal
  • Soda (High-fructose corn syrup)
  • Soybean oil
  • Salad dressing
  • Mayonaise (contains soybean oil)
  • Tofu

Tip 2 – Buy organic foods. Organic food cannot contain GMO ingredients.

Tip 3 – Look at PLU numbers on fruits and vegetables (the little stickers). Items that begin with a “5” are GMOs.

Tip 4 – Look for foods labeled “Non-GMO”.

My opinion on GMOs is “Why risk it?” If we aren’t sure about the safety of GMOs, then we should not be eating them. It is certainly not going to hurt us if we STOP consuming them. Personally I am not comfortable eating them myself or feeding them to family. I am staying away from GMOs; what about you?
